What is hMG (menotropin)?
hMG is a urine-derived mixture of the pituitary hormones FSH and LH (or LH activity). In women it stimulates follicle growth, in men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism it stimulates sperm production. In the context of steroid use it is occasionally discussed as a way to restore suppressed testicular function or fertility – without medical supervision this is misuse.
How well studied is hMG (menotropin)?
Registration trials and long clinical experience in reproductive medicine (IVF/ICSI, ovulation induction) and in male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. No robust data on use after steroid misuse outside supervised fertility treatment.
What side effects and risks does hMG (menotropin) have?
In women ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (can become severe within hours to days), multiple pregnancies and an increased risk of thrombosis. Also injection-site reactions and headache. Treatment requires close medical monitoring.
Is hMG (menotropin) approved in Germany?
In short: yes. Approved in the EU/Germany; prescription-only and pharmacy-only. WADA: contains LH activity – LH and its releasing factors are listed under S2 and prohibited at all times for male athletes (check individual cases with the national anti-doping agency). Black-market products carry a considerable quality and infection risk.
