What is Estradiol (incl. estradiol cypionate)?
Estradiol is the body's main estrogen; in men too it matters for bone, libido and fat metabolism. Medically it is used mainly in hormone therapy for menopausal symptoms and estrogen deficiency; estradiol cypionate is a long-acting ester for injection. Around steroid use, estrogen levels are often manipulated without medical supervision – for instance when they have dropped too far through excessive use of aromatase inhibitors.
How well studied is Estradiol (incl. estradiol cypionate)?
Very well studied: large trials of hormone therapy during and after menopause (including the Women's Health Initiative). There are no studies on self-directed use by men in a steroid context.
What side effects and risks does Estradiol (incl. estradiol cypionate) have?
According to the US boxed warning, estrogens increase the risk of endometrial cancer; large studies in postmenopausal women found more heart attacks, strokes, breast cancer, pulmonary embolism and thrombosis, and an increased risk of dementia from age 65. In men high levels can cause gynecomastia, loss of libido and suppression of the body's own testosterone production. Injectables from non-pharmaceutical manufacture carry infection and dosing risks.
Is Estradiol (incl. estradiol cypionate) approved in Germany?
In short: yes. Estradiol is approved in the EU/Germany in many dosage forms and is prescription-only; estradiol cypionate is approved in the US but, to our knowledge, is not marketed as a finished medicine in Germany. Not named as a prohibited substance in common summaries of the WADA Prohibited List – check individual status with the national anti-doping agency. Hormone therapy belongs under medical supervision.
