What is Triptorelin?
Triptorelin is a potent GnRH analogue. After a brief initial hormone surge ("flare"), continuous administration shuts down the pituitary and lowers testosterone or estrogen to castration levels. In bodybuilding forums the short-term stimulating effect is discussed as a supposed "restart" of the hormone axis after steroid use – a misuse with no medical evidence.
How well studied is Triptorelin?
Large registration trials and long-standing use in prostate cancer, endometriosis, fibroids, premenopausal breast cancer and reproductive medicine. For use in restoring the axis after steroid misuse there are only anecdotal reports, no controlled studies.
What side effects and risks does Triptorelin have?
The product information lists, among others, an initial testosterone surge, bone density loss, depression (sometimes severe), QT prolongation, metabolic and cardiovascular changes under hormone deprivation, and rare seizures and pituitary apoplexy. Used incorrectly it can suppress the axis long-term instead of stimulating it.
Is Triptorelin approved in Germany?
In short: yes. Approved in the EU/Germany and prescription-only. WADA: S2 (LH releasing factors) – prohibited at all times for male athletes. Possession and trafficking for doping purposes can fall under the German Anti-Doping Act (AntiDopG).
