What is Exemestane?
Exemestane is a steroidal aromatase inhibitor that permanently blocks the enzyme and so lowers estrogen production. It is approved for hormone-sensitive breast cancer after menopause, including after tamoxifen therapy. In the bodybuilding scene it is – like other aromatase inhibitors – misused for estrogen control while on steroids.
How well studied is Exemestane?
Large randomised trials and approval in breast cancer. No controlled studies for use during steroid use.
What side effects and risks does Exemestane have?
Reduced bone density with osteoporosis and fracture risk; shortness of breath and chest pain are warning signs. Hot flushes, joint pain and fatigue are common. In men, excessive estrogen suppression risks problems with bone, libido, mood and blood lipids.
Is Exemestane approved in Germany?
In short: yes. Approved in the EU/Germany and prescription-only. WADA: S4.1 (aromatase inhibitors) – prohibited at all times. Possession and trafficking for doping purposes can fall under the German Anti-Doping Act (AntiDopG).
