BPC-157: Effects, Evidence and Risks

Also known as Body Protection Compound.

StatusNot approved
EvidencePreclinical
Drug classSynthetic peptide derived from a gastric juice protein

What is BPC-157?

The best-known “healing peptide”. Said to speed up the healing of tendons, ligaments, muscles and the gut lining, partly through the formation of new blood vessels.

How well studied is BPC-157?

Over a hundred animal studies, almost all from a single research group. In humans there are only very small pilot studies without a control group. Efficacy and long-term safety have not been demonstrated.

What side effects and risks does BPC-157 have?

No systematic safety data. Because it promotes the growth of new blood vessels, it raises theoretical concerns in people with tumours.

Is BPC-157 approved in Germany?

In short: no. Not approved anywhere. In the USA, an FDA advisory committee narrowly recommended in July 2026 allowing pharmacy compounding for ulcerative colitis only – no decision has been made. Banned in sport (WADA S0).
