What is Bempedoic acid?
Blocks a step of cholesterol synthesis in the liver, upstream of where statins act. Prescribed for high LDL cholesterol, especially when statins are not tolerated or not enough.
How well studied is Bempedoic acid?
Approved in the EU since April 2020. In the large outcome trial (CLEAR Outcomes, almost 14,000 statin-intolerant patients) fewer cardiovascular events occurred on bempedoic acid than on placebo (11.7% vs. 13.3%).
What side effects and risks does Bempedoic acid have?
Commonly raised uric acid and gout attacks, muscle/limb pain, anaemia. Interactions with certain statins are possible (needs medical coordination). No known direct interaction with GLP-1 drugs; extra caution with a history of gout.
Is Bempedoic acid approved in Germany?
In short: yes. Approved in Germany/EU (Nilemdo, combination Nustendi), prescription-only. Not on the WADA Prohibited List. Taking it without a prescription and medical monitoring – e.g. bought from “peptide shops” – is dangerous: unknown quality, no lab checks, no adjustment to blood pressure, kidney values or other medicines.
