Why it happens
A full stomach that empties slowly puts pressure on the sphincter to the oesophagus. Fatty meals make this worse, because fat slows stomach emptying even further. Some people tolerate fast food on the injection surprisingly well, others get heartburn from even small amounts – it is very individual.
What helps
- Small portions, eat slowly
- Last meal about 3 hours before going to sleep
- Don’t lie down after eating; raise the head of the bed slightly
- Cut down on triggers: fatty and fried food, alcohol, coffee, fizzy drinks, very spicy food
- Avoid tight clothing around the stomach
Acid-reducing medicines from the pharmacy can help in the short term. If you need them regularly, talk to your doctor.
When to see a doctor
- Difficulty swallowing or pain when swallowing
- Vomiting, especially with blood
- Chest pain – if in doubt, always call 112
- Heartburn that lasts longer than two weeks despite these measures
In an emergency: call 112.
FAQ
Can Mounjaro cause heartburn?
Yes, reflux and heartburn are among the known gastrointestinal side effects, because stomach emptying is slowed down.
Can I eat fast food on the weight-loss injection?
It isn’t forbidden. But fatty food stays in the stomach for a particularly long time and triggers nausea or heartburn in many people. Small portions are the safer choice.
What helps quickly against heartburn?
Stay upright, drink water and, in the short term, take an antacid from the pharmacy. If you get heartburn often, have it checked by a doctor.
