What is Clenbuterol?
A long-acting asthma drug that widens the airways. It is misused in livestock fattening and bodybuilding because in animal studies it reduces fat and promotes muscle mass.
How well studied is Clenbuterol?
The alleged fat-loss and muscle effect has only been shown in livestock and laboratory animals, not in controlled human studies. What is well documented in humans are poisonings: in an Australian analysis (2004–2012), more than 80 % of reported cases required hospital admission.
What side effects and risks does Clenbuterol have?
Racing heart, arrhythmias, tremor, restlessness, dangerously low potassium and raised blood sugar; heart muscle damage, heart attack and cardiac arrest have been described, including in young people. Because of its long half-life, poisoning symptoms can last several days.
Is Clenbuterol approved in Germany?
In short: yes. Approved in Germany as an asthma drug and prescription-only, not for weight loss. WADA: prohibited at all times (S1.2, other anabolic agents). Clenbuterol is listed in the German Doping Substances Quantity Ordinance – acquiring and possessing non-small amounts for self-doping is a criminal offence under the Anti-Doping Act. Black-market products often come from the veterinary sector.
